Education and Training Committee: Update from Committee Chair Fraser Pearce

In February EACTP announced the launch of its own learning management system (LMS) with online portal capability which will allow our members and new examination candidate’s the opportunity to study for an industry recognised turnaround qualification in the disciplines of Management and Finance and Accounting.

The new European LMS will bring Europe into line with the US and the CTP qualifications.

As promised here are further details of what is coming, costs, some frequently asked topic areas we think will help you in your decision making process and importantly how to apply and get access to the site and some of the materials before you sign up to what promises to be a very exciting time for EACTP and its development.

As a quick recap the LMS will provide recommended self-study materials leading to examinations across finance & accounting, management and law examinations leading to the European Turnaround Certified Analyst (CTA) level qualification. The programme will begin with the first two modules management and finance & accounting and will open in 2016. November 2016 remains the objective for the first examinations across our European membership.

Over in the US the examinations appeal to a broad church of learners/students/participants including those who are in pursuit of our junior CTA and more senior CTP designation. The typical profile for our test takers ranges from professionals looking to make their mark in the turnaround and restructuring industry right up to mid to high-level practitioners including candidates who hold positions such as CRO, Interim Manager, Turnaround Team Leader, or Creditor committee representatives.

Anyone can pursue our CTA designation, including those who are recent graduates or new to the industry. Those pursuing the CTP must have amassed direct turnaround experience, held leadership roles along the way and apply for Associateship with one case study or Membership with three case studies.  Further details can be found on the web site.

We have a number of firms over in the US that pay for their employee’s certification costs and annual maintenance fees. So it is worth students and candidates exploring that option.

In order to motivate our prospective candidates and recognising this is a new European initiative we want our prospective applicants to be able to have a look if they would like and preview one of our Body of Knowledge books so we can secure interest in what we know will be a worthwhile but important career decision.

In most cases, students may apply for one or more of the following reasons:

  • To gain a competitive edge in the industry
  • To prove their knowledge and commitment to the industry
  • As an objective measure of their experience, knowledge, and integrity that is necessary to conduct corporate renewal work
  • To enhance future earning power
  • To distinguish themselves from their colleagues

How long will it take for a student to go through each module typically? Well this greatly depends on individual experience and the time available to them however we normally recommend applicants take approximately 4-8 weeks to digest the material for each exam they intend to complete. We do require that applicants complete all three examinations within a two-year window that begins following the receipt of their first passing examination score.

The price of €350 Euros or £275 GBP for each of the 3 modules will be charged but the EACTP is offering the following incentives:

€600 Euros / £460 GBP for candidates committing to both Management and Accounting and finance modules during 2016

A further 10% reduction for the first 20 candidates that apply and are accepted

No specific IT requirements are necessary for access to the LMS portal – just a laptop / PC with webcam capability for the examinations themselves which are conducted in conjunction with professional and remote invigilators that meet strict requirements for confidence in the examination process.
